The Storm

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Definition: What is a storm? A storm is something contrary to the normal. Extreme weather that causes destruction, fear, panic, and anxiety. Disturbance in the atmosphere.

Bible Verses: Matthew 8:23-27, Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 4:35-42, Mark 6:45-52, Luke 8:22-25, John 6:15-21, Acts 27

Characteristics of a Storm:

1. Storms never last. They are temporary

2. Unpredictable outbursts

3. Tense and difficult situation

All the gospels capture at least one account of a storm. Different disciples, same story. That tells me that the stormy episodes they encountered made a huge impression on them and left an indelible mark on their hearts. As such, COVID-19, qualifies to be called a stormy situation.

Response in the storm:

1. Seek His presence, purpose, power, peace: Mark 4:38, Mark 6:45

2. Do not be afraid: Mark 4:40

3. Faith: Do not doubt. Mark 4:40, Heb 11:1-3

4. Worship: Matthew 14:33, John 4:24

5. Surrender: Let go and let God. Believe that nothing can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:38-39. Jesus said “Father, not my will, but yours be done” - Luke 22:42, at the most trying time of His life. Acts 27:15

6. Seek wisdom and understanding and apply it: Acts 27:11

Opportunities in the storm:

1. To strategize and reinvent yourself

2. To grow deeper in prayers and keep hope alive: Acts 27:20-23

3. To grow in the Word: Psalm 119:89 – “Forever, O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven.”

4. To reconnect: Reflect on relationships with spouses, children, church family, God, and take these to a new level.

5. To know God on a deeper level: Mark 4:41

6. To rest: Jesus was asleep in the storm: Mark 4:38-39

7. To redeem the time and be obedient: Acts 27:9-12

8. To Build Resilience: Spiritual muscle - Proverbs 24:10 - If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. Acts 27:33-35

9. To witness: Acts 27:21-26

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths” – even in the storm.

The Father is with you and will keep you anchored until this storm passes. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; He will exult over you with loud singing.”

Be assured that after the storm comes the calm. You will get through this.

Shalom
